We’ve already heard rumours of a new Xbox One, but now it seems Sony could be joining the fray with the recent leak of the ‘PlayStation Neo’.

Microsoft seems to be taking a good look at their Xbox One strategy, and just a week ago we reported new rumours that an Xbox One Slim could be in the works. Now, a new leak has indicated the existence of a PlayStation Neo; could this be the PS4.5?

What we’ll refer to as the PlayStation Neo takes its name from an internal codename at Sony for a console with some decidedly interesting specifications; namely, a CPU with 8 Jaguar Cores (clocked at 2.1GHz), an AMD GCN GPU (36 CUs at 911MHz) and 8GBs of GDDR5 RAM at 218GB/s.

This makes for an impressive increase (at least on paper) from Sony’s present console, the PlayStation 4. The report from Giant Bomb states that PlayStation 4 games in future will be required to ship in two modes – a ‘Base Mode’ and ‘Neo Mode’ – which will allow titles to run on both platforms.

That news sounds unlikely to us, but stranger things have happened. The PlayStation Neo will allegedly be able to output a 4K image, leaving some across the internet to dub the console the ‘PS4K’.

The report indicates that the PlayStation Neo’s HDD will be ‘the same’ as the original PS4, though there is little clarity on if any particulars or offerings (capacity or speed come to mind) would differ from the original PlayStation 4.
